Dr. Jun-Hyun Kim is director and professor in the School of Planning, Design & Construction (SPDC) at Michigan State University (MSU). Previously, he served as program director of both the Landscape Architecture and the Master of Environmental Design programs at MSU. Prior to joining MSU through a targeted search, he held positions as an assistant professor at Texas A&M University (TAMU) and California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo.

Dr. Kim has received numerous awards for his outstanding contributions to the field, including the Excellence in Design Studio Teaching Award (senior level) from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA). With this award, he became the first faculty member in CELA’s history, spanning over 100 years, to win eight CELA awards, including three major ones: Excellence in Research Award (2015), Excellence in Teaching Award (2017), and Excellence in Design Studio Teaching Award (2021). In addition, he received the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) Excellence in Teaching Award in the Established Teacher Category in 2023, along with the Montague-CTE Scholar University Teaching Award, and the Outstanding Instructor and Mentor Awards from TAMU.

In service to his academic community, Dr. Kim was elected CELA President in 2023, served as CELA’s Secretary and Vice President for Communications, Outreach, and Publications in 2018, co-chaired the CELA Urban Design Track in 2017, and was appointed as an editor for the Landscape and Ecological Engineering journal in 2020. He was also selected for the inaugural cohort of the CANR Leadership Development program at MSU in 2019.

Dr. Kim's research focuses on the impacts of environments on human and ecological health, enhancing community resilience. He has secured multi-million-dollar research grants from organizations including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Michigan Department of Transportation, and the Landscape Architecture Foundation. His research involves assessing environmental perception, measuring mental and physical health, conducting environmental assessments, and producing planning and design outputs that improve health and resilience in high-risk populations. With a multidisciplinary approach, Dr. Kim has expanded his research to encompass environmental, social, and economic dimensions of community resilience planning and design, securing internationally collaborative research funds from the Architecture and Urban Research Institute in South Korea. He has published numerous articles in reputable peer-reviewed journals and presented over 100 refereed papers and abstracts at various conferences.

As an educator, before becoming the SPDC Director, Dr. Kim taught core landscape architecture courses, led a study abroad program in Costa Rica, and integrated over 30 service-learning projects into his curriculum, offering students experiential learning opportunities. Under his mentorship, several student design teams received national recognition, including awards from the EPA National Campus RainWorks Challenge and the ASLA Student Design Awards. Throughout his career, he has served on more than 70 graduate student committees.
